Green Spaces Project of the Month

August 2002 - Abbeyfield Park Multicultural Festival. Sheffield
Contact: panni@greencityaction.co.uk

The Abbeyfield Park Multicultural Festival was held for the fourth year on July 7th. The event was initiated and organised by Panni Loh of the Green City Action. The festival was established as a way of celebrating and connecting people of diverse cultural backgrounds with the environment through the use of an inner city park. Before this event was started, many ethnic groups did not feel that it was their park and did not use the park much, if at all. Besides providing a major enjoyable event, the use of the park by ethnic groups has also increased.

7000 people attended to enjoy over 80 global craft and food stalls. The crowds were entertained on a scorching hot day by a multitude of performers and artists with colourful dance and song.

There were 7 hours of stage entertainment celebrating Bhangara, Irish dancing, Chinese dancing, reggae and gospel music, R'n'B, Spanish Salsa and Chilean Meerenga, plus the powerful performance of SIYAYA from Zimbabwe.

The organisers had cleverly booked a beautiful day for the event. This added to the enjoyment of the show gardens. The crowd could choose to chill-out and enjoy the live broadcast from BBC Radio Sheffield's 'Global Beats' or take part in the well organised Workshop activities.

The workshops around the park got people learning how to twisel 'poi', drumming, dancing, anglo saxon wood turning, art using reused material and much more.
