Green Spaces Project of the Month

July 2002 - The Kafel Centre. Swansea

Drawing by Shafiul Islam (Bengali)

The Kafel Garden Project is still in the early stages of development. It will be interesting to follow the progress of this green space to see the stages of development.

A main point of interest is the elaborate consultation exercise that has been undertaken and the resulting consultation report.

Kafel is a voluntary charity organisation working with Swansea's Muslim ethnic minority community. It has taken its name from an Arabic word meaning 'to nurture'.

The aim of the Kafel project is to transform an unused church into a Community Centre and to develop its grounds. The centre will be designed to meet the needs of the whole community and send out a positive message by creating an amenity that can benefit the wider community.

This Green Space in waiting has huge potential, and with the correct organisation and design the garden will bring life back to the abandoned church and establish the Centre as a local land mark.

At present there are very few green spaces in the city centre and the Kafel Centre provides an ideal location for creating such a space. It is Kafel's intention that the Centre should benefit, in particular, the most vulnerable and neglected sections of this community, namely, women, youth, the elderly and the disabled.
